The Caribbean area consists of the myriad of islands separating the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea and the latter from the Atlantic Ocean. The islands are grouped into archipelagos, which in turn are included in larger groups:
- The Great Antilles (Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica and Puerto Rico), of which the major is Cuba;
- The small Antilles that form the eastern half of the insular arc;
- The Bahama Islands, of coral nature, to the northeast of the Great Antilles.
The climate is tropical, rather rainy and with constant temperature throughout the year, mitigated by the presence of the sea, home to violent atmospheric phenomena such as tropical storms and hurricanes due also to the presence of hot water due to the current of Gulf. Populated since ancient times by the indigenous peoples of Latin America, they are the region of the Americas first discovered by Europeans because of the nautical routes known at the time that exploited the trade winds: it landed in fact Christopher Columbus.
In addition to coffee and cotton plantations and subsistence agriculture, an important economic contribution is represented by international tourism thanks to the presence of beaches along the coasts with good accommodation and warm tropical climate.
